The team also interviewed six participants about their experiences. “In our study, interaction time refers to how long it takes to extract information, and that’s why reducing it is a good thing.” “We want people to interact with a graph as much as they want, but we also don’t want them to spend an hour trying to find what the maximum is,” Sharif said. Sharif et al./CHI 2022Ĭompared to participants from a previous study who did not have access to this tool, VoxLens users completed the tasks with 122% increased accuracy and 36% decreased interaction time. (labeled with ‘a’) presented the question a participant would be answering, page 2 (b) displayed the question and the visualization and page 3 (c) showed the question with four multiple choice responses. Participants learned how to use VoxLens and then completed nine tasks (one of which is shown here), each of which involved answering questions about a visualization. We’re going to build it taking users’ feedback into account. “We’re not going to build something and then see how it works. “In the field of accessibility, it’s really important to follow the principle of ‘nothing about us without us,'” Sharif said. The team started the project by working with five screen-reader users with partial or complete blindness to figure out how a potential tool could work. It’s just not structured in the same way, which means there’s no obvious entry point or sequencing for screen readers.” “But as soon as you move things into two dimensional spaces, such as visualizations, there’s no clear start and finish. Wobbrock, UW professor in the Information School. “There is a start and an end of a sentence and everything else comes in between,” said co-senior author Jacob O. Screen readers can inform users about the text on a screen because it’s what researchers call “one-dimensional information.” The goal of our project is to give screen-reader users a platform where they can extract as much or as little information as they want.” “Right now, screen-reader users either get very little or no information about online visualizations, which, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, can sometimes be a matter of life and death. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering. “If I’m looking at a graph, I can pull out whatever information I am interested in, maybe it’s the overall trend or maybe it’s the maximum,” said lead author Ather Sharif, a UW doctoral student in the Paul G. The team presented this project May 3 at CHI 2022 in New Orleans. VoxLens users can gain a high-level summary of the information described in a graph, listen to a graph translated into sound or use voice-activated commands to ask specific questions about the data, such as the mean or the minimum value. University of Washington researchers worked with screen-reader users to design VoxLens, a JavaScript plugin that - with one additional line of code - allows people to interact with visualizations. Millions of Americans use screen readers for a variety of reasons, including complete or partial blindness, learning disabilities or motion sensitivity. For example, they can showcase the number of coronavirus infections in each state.īut these graphics often are not accessible to people who use screen readers, software programs that scan the contents of a computer screen and make the contents available via a synthesized voice or Braille. Interactive visualizations have changed the way we understand our lives. Shown here is a screen reader with a refreshable Braille display.

The Tonido app has been great and I’m sure my family will be using it more and more. Besides allowing me to access my movie and music library remotely, it is nice not being limited to the storage space on my mobile devices. The app is free and a must have for anyone who has a desktop computer and mobile devices. I am still figuring out features of the App but the user interface is simple and in addition to playing back media it also seems to allow me to manage the filesystem. Some file management features include the ability to: Really the Tonido app is a game changer for our family. After getting the app installed on all the different devices in our house I was amazed that my wife was using Tonido on her iPad, my son was using the app on my old iPhone, and I was writing this review on the computer they were linked to. The coolest part for me was the ability to share over multiple platforms and at the same time. I’ll be honest in that I thought there would be no way that the app would work on both devices as quickly and flawlessly as Tonido did. I went to Google play on my LG phone and downloaded the Tonido app there and within 3 minutes I was looking at a photo album also stored on my desktop computer. Like many Apple products, it just worked!Īfter the great success I had with my iPhone, I decided to test the App on an Android device. To get started: Step 1: Install Tonido Desktop server (Available for FREE from for your OS. I could quickly and easily view the different media files on my desktop computer while on my iPod and selecting them to stream so I could listen to music or watch movies was almost instantaneous. Designed and optimized for tablet form factor, Tonido is one of the most beautiful and functional app in the Google Play store to instantly stream, access and share your personal media. I downloaded the Tonido app from iTunes store and then when prompted I entered in my username and password and within three minutes I was listening to an mp3 file from my home computer. I first tested how this all would work my iPhone. When the installation was complete I created a user account and password with Tonido to allow me to connect to the computer securely from other devices. A Tonido cloud server provides a private cloud storage solution and. I first installed the desktop Tonido software on the computer where I store my movie and music collect. But, once I was there and clicked on the get started tab, the site walked me through step by step and was very clear on how to install and configure the software needed to use the Tonido app. After installing the app on my iPhone, I was a little nervous when it asked me to download software from the Tonido home website as not many iOS apps require something to be installed on your computer. To get started with Tonido I had to do a few things before I could begin watching my movie collection on all my electronic devices. Essentially, through a Tonido desktop app, your computer becomes a media server that other devices can securely connect to to access your content. Tonido is an app that is designed to assist in managing files from a computer and making them available on multiple devices. The other problem is finding a way for me to access my movies on my different computers, tablets, iPhone, and even a few Android devices. Getting my video collection into a digital format is only half the problem. I’ve recently been spending time working on converting that DVD collection to a digital format because the latest technology like the iPad doesn’t allow for me to watch my DVDs in their current physical format. I’ll admit that I shutter when I think about how much I’ve spent on movies over the past 10 years. I have a DVD collection that is so large it fills multiple 100 DVD cases. If a character has no armour or other defensive gear equipped in these titles, then their defence will be half of their agility:ĭ e f e n c e = ( A g i l i t y / 2 ) + A r m o u r Įquipping a weapon corresponding to the weapon skill trait will add 3% to the Critical Hit rate and wearing the Critical Acclaim accessory will add another 4%.Īny character can consume a seed of deftness to increase this attribute.Ĭharm is a measurement of a character's attractiveness. In the NES versions of the first four games plus remake versions of Dragon Quest III, agility also contributes to the character's defence attribute. The game's programming checks the agility stat of the target before an attack is made, and if the stat surpasses a certain value then the programming checks to see if the blow lands. Additionally, in Dragon Quest VI, Dragon Quest VII, and Dragon Quest VIII a character's agility will also determine their probability to dodge physical strikes. In later installments, some skills depend solely on Strength for determining damage output, ignoring whether a weapon is equipped or not.Īny character can consume a seed of strength to increase this attribute.Īgility (すばやさ) determines a character's priority in turns, utilizing a Gaussian Curve as Encounter mechanics. Strength (ちから) measures how physically strong a character is, and is added to a character's weapon bonus to determine the Attack attribute and damage inflicted upon an enemy. Prior to Dragon Quest VI, non-magical characters had no MP pools as they had no use for them, but with the addition of skills, most characters began accumulating an MP pool even if they never learned any actual spells.Īny character can consume a seed of magic to increase their maximum MP. In other titles, the maximum MP a character has is generally determined by their level and (if applicable) vocation. In Dragon Quest III, maximum Magic Points is 195 to 205% of the Wisdom value, paralleling the resilience stat. Starting with Dragon Quest VI, skills were introduced that also consumed MP. Some very special spells like Magic Burst will consume all remaining MP when cast. Each spell deducts from this pool at a set rate, and cannot be cast if MP is too low. Magic Points (MP), or Magic Power (魔法力) in The Adventure of Dai, determine how much mana a character can expend to cast spells. In all other titles, the maximum HP a character has is generally determined by their level and (if applicable) vocation, with Martial Artists, Warriors, and Paladins having the highest on average.Īny character can consume a seed of life to increase their maximum HP. The more a character's resilience score increases upon leveling, the more Hit Points a character will receive upon the next level increase. In Dragon Quest III and IV, resilience directly determines a character's maximum Hit Points, it being between 195 to 205% of the Resilience value. HP can be restored via medicinal herbs, healing spells, resting at an inn, etc. All damage subtracts from this score, and if it reaches 0, the character can no longer participate in battle, and must be revived. Hit Points (HP), or life value (生命値), determine how much health a character has remaining. Overall, this distribution only applies outside of dungeons. The experience distribution between the main party and the wagon party differs by game. In most games, experience is tied to the stat growth of each individual player character, though in Dragon Quest III and IX stat growth is dependent on the character's vocation. When a character accrues a specific, predetermined number of experience points, they will "level up" (that is, gain a level of experience) and receive parameter increases particular to their overall character type. The more powerful the monsters, the greater the amount of experience points gained. The completion of a quest may also yield EXP like in Dragon Quest IV. Experience points (often shortened to EXP) are gained at the end of a battle (whether fixed or random encounter) as a reward. Although that certainly is one way to define a pickpocket, they can also be entertaining if it is done in the right way. When you think about a pickpocket, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Most people will automatically think about somebody who is stealing items as a form of petty theft on the streets at a large gathering or somewhere in a major city. We also recognize that there are some people who have talents that are used for all the wrong reasons, and that is the case with pickpockets. In fact, there really is no limit as to what a person can be good at doing, provided they are entertaining when they do it. We tend to gravitate toward those who can sing or dance, but honestly, if they have the ability to do something better than somebody else, then they have the opportunity to entertain for that very reason. Maybe it means more to the Aussies than the Americans, but to me it just comes across as your average B crime film. When it comes to talented individuals, there truly are no limits as to what they are capable of doing. Things come to an end for Squizzy when he’s double-crossed going after the gangster Snowy Cutmore ( Steve Bisley), who raped his Dolly. It works as the public is intrigued by the lad. Squizzy uses rookie Herald reporter Reg Harvey ( Robert Hughes ) by feeding him gang stories to make sure his misdeeds get noticed in the newspapers in a way that he comes out looking good to the public. When money comes his way, Squizzy likes to act like a big timer and take his dumb broad Dolly ( Jacki Weaver ) dancing at the hot clubs while behind Dolly’s back he chases after other skirts. At the same time Squizzy plays off two ambitious rival Melbourne coppers ( Alan Cassell & Michael Long), by feeding them inside info on gang activities so they can get the best of the other. Squizzy, a known pickpocket and punk who others humiliate, uses his influence with a gambling mobster ( Peter Paulsen ) to initiate an unwanted gang war with a rival mob that includes firebombing a saloon and a tommy-gun raid executed in vintage cars. It opens in 1919 Melbourne, a crime infested city that’s also experiencing an influenza epidemic. Supposedly Squizzy was to Melbourne what Al Capone was to Chicago, but his squeaky voice makes the tough guy seem too comical to be taken seriously. Australian television director Kevin Dobson (“The Mango Tree””Image of Death”/” The Virgin of Juarez “) colorfully recreates the Melbourne of the period, as the pic chronicles the rise and fall of the real-life pint-sized gangster Squizzy Taylor ( David Atkins). There are some nice tools for portrait photographers, and the Relight feature will be worthwhile. Share is free in the Apple and Google app store. You have to on the same network as your PC or Mac, but I found the app worked well, and it's something some users will be enthusiastic about. It also makes it easy for users to share edited photos to their social media accounts. Neo also includes Luminar Share. Luminar Share is an app that allows Luminar Neo users to transfer photos from desktop to mobile (and the opposite direction) wirelessly. You can also save a series of parameters and make your own presets, and that will be valuable to many. I doubt pros will want them, but less experienced photographers will enjoy experimenting with preset styles. It doesn't add anything other editors don't have, but it's nice to see it added here. I like Skylum's design of their gradient tool, and it would be good to have instead of the Relight tool which is disappointing. Luminar Neo runs natively on the M1 Mac, which is a real benefit.Īs a landscape photographer, I wish the upcoming masking tools were included now, not later. You can open Neo as a plugin from Photoshop or Lightroom, and you can open it from Apple Photos, or the comparable Microsoft program. Sky replacements and adjustments to raw files are quick, almost real-time. When you're in the app, speeds seem pretty comparable to Luminar AI. I like the idea of being able to configure lighting in this way. I'm hoping Skylum will change this behavior, and I think they have missed the boat here. Luminar Neo has other tools in the sky controls for that. I think most professionals would agree that lighting changes in distant objects should not change the sky. While it does what it advertises, the distant darkening and lightening extends to the sky, which I don't think it should do. Dust spots were also cleanly removed.Īnd after removing the power lines with one click. In this latest release, power lines were perfectly removed in my tests, even when the lines were in front of a mountain or behind trees. In early builds of Neo, power lines were removed, but if you looked closely, you could see some artifacts. The big changes are the dust spot removal and power line removal tools. Luminar AI users will see a lot of the same tools. Neo took 15 seconds until it was ready to edit an image. Luminar AI takes about five seconds to launch on my Mac laptop. In general, when inside the app, I don't see any speed fall-off from Luminar AI, but on my M1 Mac Pro laptop, it doesn't seem faster either. My ImpressionsĪt this point, as it ships today, it's a good, well-working app. Some features aren't going to make today's release. Portrait Background RemovalAI and MaskAI are planned for the first free update to Luminar Neo, scheduled for release in the spring of 2022. As is the case with Luminar AI, Luminar Neo can run standalone or as a Photoshop or Lightroom plugin. Skylum says the software is faster in many operations than Luminar AI: faster at adding effects and at exporting. Or, build and save your own unique looks for reuse on future shoots. Presets: Instant style changes designed by professional photographers of every stripe. Layers: Combine different images into unique compositions and include new elements from built-in overlays and object libraries. Remove Power Lines: Uses AI to automatically identify and effortlessly remove power lines from landscape photographs to create a pristine image free from clutter. Remove Dust Spots: Automatically identify and seamlessly remove small artifacts, like dust spots, from every photo with the help of AI. Combine RelightAI with other scene-aware tools and photographers can precisely adjust the lighting of any photo. It can help to easily fix portraits where the foreground subject is underexposed. RelightAI isolates problem areas for correction, leaving the rest of the image untouched. RelightAI builds a 3D Depth Map of the 2D image to provide quick, targeted control of scene lighting, allowing artists to independently adjust lighting and color warmth for far and near objects across the scene. Here are some details on the new features: Skylum says the Luminar engine was built from the ground up, and by using artificial intelligence, the software analyzes your photos to unlock new, AI-driven editing possibilities. For professionals, time is money, and Neo can save a photographer buckets of time. These technologies significantly change the way photos are edited, using AI to speed up what before were complex editing tasks. The software introduces several unique AI technologies, including RelightAI, Powerline Removal, and Dust Spot Removal. |
